ODDO-SAIDI - A MULTIDISCIPLINARY DESIGN STUDIO
Marks and mark-making have always captivated me. A single, unassuming line can be imbued with weight, movement, dimension, direction, and a personality all its own. With the addition of color and gradation, this transformation becomes a sort of alchemy—seemingly turning two dimensions into three.
In 1982 I attended an anatomy and drawing class at the Art Students League. The instructor, an elderly man with horn-rimmed glasses and a well worn tweed jacket held an eraser in one hand and a chalk-tipped pointer in the other. He delivered his lecture with sweeping gestures that resulted in perfect marks on a chalk board while intermittently articulating a full length skeleton. At the end of the class he reminded us that this lesson would be ineffectual if we didn't practice every day. In 2019 I taught myself graphic design using an open-source software which I now integrate in my artistic studies.
I try to practice a little every day.
"Nulla Dies Sine Linea"—"No day without a line"—is the motto of the Art Students League in New York City, and it serves as a guiding principle in my work.
