The Cloisters Museum in Manhattan is a must see. Nestled in a corner of Fort Tryon Park and overlooking the Hudson River, this museum is dedicated to Medieval art and architecture. As a local I would visit almost everyday, after school (Mother Cabrini High School was walking distance). Its meditative, cloistered walkways provide a get-away from the noise and bustle of life in Manhattan. It is truly transportive.
Be sure to visit the Unicorn Tapestries and search for the letters A&E.
